One month prior to the August, 2009 presidential elections the security situation in Afghanistan is far from stable, with the insurgency still exerting control over vast areas of the country. On 2nd July, US Forces launched a major offensive in the Southern province of Helmand, a Taleban stronghold and producer of over half of the opium crop. Ongoing operation 'Khanjar' is claiming many lives among American and coalition troops. Our reporter spent 10 days embedded with US troops in Eastern Paktya province, close to the porous and troublesome border to Pakistan. His exclusive reports were aired on Swiss National TV.
