On 20th August, 2009 Afghanistan will hold its second presidential and provincial elections. Citizens will be requested to cast their ballot amid insecurity and renewed violence on the part of the Taleban, who have vowed to disrupt the democratic process by attacking polling stations and severely punishing voters. At the height of the electoral campaign, Weast Productions travelled to the country. In Kabul we met Ramazan Bashardost, a French-educated MP, former Minister and highly popular candidate. He lives in a tent just outside Parliament and openly accuses both incumbent Karzai and international NGOs of corruption. We also interviewed Sabrina Sagheb, the youngest parlamentarian and activist who questions the future of women’s rights in the event of government negotiations with so-called moderate Taleban. Gianluca Grossi reports.
