Debates abound in increasingly secular Europe over the religious rights of a wide Muslim community. The all-encompassing nature of Islam as a religion and way of life often generates heated discussions on what are perceived as the limits of integration. Liberal and multicultural Switzerland, where generally inconspicuous and well-assimilated Muslims amount to 5% of the total population, makes no exception: a poll is currently pending on a far-right proposal to ban the construction of minarets. Weast recently travelled to Egypt and retrieved the views of Sheikh Khaled el-Gendy, journalist Husam Tammam and editor Youssef Sidhoum on the issue.
